Herald to Offer Audio Edition of Weekend Stories

Starting March 7, readers of the Calloway Herald will be able to hear its weekend features section as well as read it. Each Saturday, subscribers will have access to about a dozen stories read aloud by the newspaper's own reporters rather than by professional narrators. [1]

Editor-in-chief Marisol Quintero said the idea grew out of a reader survey conducted last autumn. [2] Nearly 40 percent of respondents reported that they rarely had time to read longer articles, but many said they listened to podcasts or other audio programs while commuting or exercising. "We want our best reporting to fit into our readers' daily routines," Ms. Quintero explained. [3]

The recordings will be available through the Herald's mobile app and on its Web site. [4] Print and digital subscribers will have access at no extra charge, while nonsubscribers may listen to two stories per week for free. If the service proves popular, the paper intends to add a daily news summary later in the year.
